Why Do Some People Need Donor Eggs?

When people think about starting a family, many assume the journey will be straightforward. But for some individuals and couples, having a child requires the help of an egg donor.
At Fertility North, we see many scenarios where people turn to donor eggs to build their families. While every situation is unique, there are several reasons why someone may need donor eggs to achieve pregnancy.
Common Reasons People Use Donor Eggs
1. Low Ovarian Reserve or Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)
Some people are born with fewer eggs than expected, while others experience an earlier-than-normal decline in their egg supply.
This condition, known as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), can occur well before the age at which most people expect fertility to decline. When egg numbers or ovarian function become very low, achieving pregnancy using one’s own eggs may no longer be possible.
For these individuals, donor eggs can provide a pathway to parenthood that would otherwise not be available.
2. Genetic Conditions
For some families, the concern is not the ability to produce eggs, but the possibility of passing on a serious inherited condition.
In these circumstances, donor eggs may be considered to reduce the risk of a child inheriting a genetic disorder that could significantly affect their health or quality of life.
The decision to use donor eggs is often made after careful medical advice, genetic counselling, and thoughtful consideration of the options available.
3. Poor IVF Outcomes
IVF can be an emotional journey, particularly when multiple treatment cycles do not result in pregnancy.
Sometimes, despite producing eggs, the eggs may not fertilise successfully, develop into healthy embryos, or implant in the uterus. In these cases, donor eggs may offer a greater chance of creating healthy embryos and achieving a successful pregnancy.
For many patients, donor eggs become an important option after years of trying to conceive.
4. Advanced Maternal Age
Age is one of the most significant factors affecting fertility.
As people get older, both the number and quality of eggs naturally decline. This can make conception more difficult and increase the risk of miscarriage.
While many people successfully conceive later in life, some may ultimately require donor eggs to achieve pregnancy.
5. Ovarian Damage Following Medical Treatment
Life-saving medical treatments can sometimes come at a cost to fertility.
Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and certain ovarian surgeries can affect egg quantity and quality. This impact may occur at any age and can be temporary or permanent. For individuals who may be preparing for treatment, options like fertility preservation can sometimes help protect future family-building choices.
For cancer survivors and others who have undergone significant medical treatment, donor eggs can offer hope for creating a family in the future.
More Than a Medical Decision
While the reasons for needing donor eggs vary, one thing remains the same: the desire to create a family.
Many recipients have spent years navigating fertility challenges, medical diagnoses, unsuccessful treatments, or difficult decisions before considering donor eggs. For others, donor eggs are simply the pathway that makes parenthood possible.
Many people or couples spend time:
- Processing grief around not using their own eggs
- Navigating identity and expectations of parenthood
- Considering future conversations with their child
- Exploring what family means to them
The Role of Donors
Behind every donor egg journey is someone who made the decision to donate.
Egg donors play a powerful role in helping people build families they may not otherwise have. Their choice can have a lifelong impact, not only for intended parents, but for future children as well.
“At Fertility North, we support people who have often faced years of fertility challenges and heartache while trying to build their family. Donors play a vital role for these patients. Without them, many of our patients would be forced to travel overseas for treatment,” explains Fertility North’s Donor Coordinator.
For those who choose to donate, this is an opportunity to make an extraordinary difference in someone else’s life.
